The porch roof was in a sorry state before the roof repairs in 2013. The wood structure was fine, the sandstone slates were fine but the nails holding the slates to the wooden slats beneath had rusted away since 1915 when the roof was last replaced.

Great holes appeared where groups of slates all broke away, so just in case the whole slate covering should avalanche down, the slates were carefully removed and stored in the church until they could be put back as part of the roof repair project.

The porch roof is in a pretty good state now - have a look outside! Notice too, the fine cast iron gutters and downpipes, all beautifully replaced.
